DIY: Coconut Oil and Lavender Exfoliating Scrub

Coconut oil has become very popular in the beauty industry.  I  always keep it on hand, and use it several different ways for skincare.  It's great to use for makeup remover, dry skin and split ends.  But, my favorite is combining it with essential oils and sugar for a great facial/body scrub.
I have fallen in love with this simple face scrub.  My skin is so much softer and brighter after using it.  Not only is it a breeze to make, but it's a much cheaper alternative to the high priced industry brands.
There's a few variations of this recipe floating around, but this one is my favorite.

 Choose an Organic Coconut Oil

In my opinion, the best organic coconut oil is Trader Joe's.  I'm sure there are other brands that are just as good, but this is the only one I use.  If you have a favorite brand, that's fine, just make sure it's organic.  You don't want any "unknown" ingredients going on your skin.

Choose an Essential Oil

My favorite essential oil is Lavender.  There's many other wonderful scents you can use, so be creative and try different ones out.  Be sure that if you use a citrus oil, only use it as a body scrub.  It will burn your eyes if you use it on your face.  Also, citrus oil can leave your skin very sensitive to sunlight, so be careful when using it.
Recently, I've been adding a tiny amount of Vitamin E.  This is something I just decided to try, and I really like it.  If you want to add some as well, you can find it here.

                                       Storage and Container Options

This recipe below makes quite a bit of product, and you will be able to use it several times.  Decide on a storage container to keep it fresh.  You need one that seals.  This scrub will last for up to 2 months if stored properly.  I like to use a glass container with a bale clasp.  But, you can use a plastic jar as well.

DIY Facial Scrub

Ingredients:
  • 1/4 cup organic coconut oil
  • 3/4 cup white sugar
  • 1 tablespoon of honey
  • 10 drops of lavender
  • 1/2 teaspoon of vitamin E oil
Directions:
Combine all the ingredients in a bowl and make sure everything is mixed up thoroughly.  Apply to wet skin, and massage gently over skin, avoiding the eye area.  Once finished, rinse well with warm water and pat dry with towel.  You will be able to see and feel a difference instantly.  This is one of my favorite beauty rituals and I hope you love it as much as I do.
